In 1918, Jagadguri Sri Shivarathri Rajendra Mahaswamigalu, the 23rd pontiff, laid the foundation for the original JSS Hospital at Mysore. The hospital was set up to improve the welfare of all the citizens. His Holiness attained samadhi in 1986.

Currently, His Holiness Jagadguru Sri Shivarathri Deshikendra Mahaswamiji is the president of JSS Medical Service Trust. The trust has set up model health villages in Bangalore and Mysore, a dental hospital, an Ayurvedic hospital, and a Naturopathy hospital.
