In 1981, the Salem Cancer Institute (SCI) was founded, marking the inception of the first cancer hospital catering to around 8 surrounding districts of Salem. With 50 beds and comprehensive equipment and infrastructure, the hospital was well-equipped for providing high-quality patient care. In 1996, with the goal of offering comprehensive medical services, Thirumigu Vanavasi P. Shanmugam and Dr. P. S. Panneerselvam established the Shanmuga Medical Research Foundation Trust (SMRFT). Subsequently, in 1998, the Shanmuga Institute of Post Graduate Medical Sciences (SIMS) was established to contribute qualified healthcare professionals to the medical field. SIMS is affiliated with Dr. M.G.R. Medical University. At present, Shanmuga Hospital stands as a Multispecialty Hospital with the largest in-patient bed capacity.
