Dr. G. Venkataswamy, or Dr. V, is the founder and former chairman of Aravind Eye Hospitals. He had a diploma and a master’s degree in Ophthalmology, and despite being diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, learned how to hold a scalpel and perform cataract surgery through sheer determination and hard work. In his lifetime, Dr. V has performed over 1 lac successful eye surgeries.

Dr. V received the Padma Shri Award in 1973 by the Government of India for his fight against blindness. After retirement from government service, he founded Aravind Eye Hospital in 1976. Initially a 11 bed facility, the hospital has grown over the years, with multiple locations all over Tamil Nadu.
