About Aravind Eye Hospital

<p><span style="font-size: 14px;">Aravind Eye Hospital is one of Tamil Nadu’s biggest eye care hospitals. Aravind Eye Hospital Tirunelveli was established in 1988 to cater to the increasing volume of patients from southern Tamil Nadu. With the latest technology and state of the art infrastructure, the hospital can accommodate 150 paying and 350 free patients.</span></p><p><span style="font-size: 14px;">In addition to this, Aravind Eye Hospital Tirunelveli is an accredited teaching institution. By the end of last year, the hospital had successfully performed over 58,000 surgeries and handled over 5,85,000 outpatient procedures.</span></p><p><span style="font-size: 14px;">Aravind Eye Hospital Tirunelveli has an emergency room that is open round the clock for any medical emergency relating to the eye. The hospital has a few vision centers in Tirunelveli as well. Vision centers are small facilities that provide eye care to remote communities. Venkataswamy, or Dr. V, is the founder and former chairman of Aravind Eye Hospitals. He had a diploma and a master’s degree in Ophthalmology, and despite being diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, learned how to hold a scalpel and perform cataract surgery through sheer determination and hard work. In his lifetime, Dr. V has performed over 1 lac successful eye surgeries.</span></p><p><span style="font-size: 14px;">Dr. V received the Padma Shri Award in 1973 by the Government of India for his fight against blindness. After retirement from government service, he founded Aravind Eye Hospital in 1976.
